Whitewater Rafter in Class V Rapid Noon Light in on a mountain path near Bobo-Dioulasso

Whitewater Rafter in Class V Rapid Noon Light

by Sherry Skinner

Brilliant noon sunlight flattens the scene, turning the churning river into a sheet of blinding white foam. A rafter in a red inflatable boat fights the violent current, paddles raised high against the spray. The water crashes over rocks, creating a chaotic wall of white that dwarfs the small vessel. Behind the rapid, a dusty mountain path winds along the ridge, bordered by dry grasses turning golden at the season's shift. Patches of thick ground fog rest on the riverbank, contrasting sharply with the harsh overhead glare. The rafter's yellow helmet stands out against the grey stone, while the boat's inflated tubes press tight against the turbulent surface. One droplet of water hangs from the tip of a paddle blade, suspended before falling.
