Kayaker Pounding Standing Wave in Gorge After Rain
by Lena Curtis
Soft, diffused light from a late morning sky after rain illuminates a wide river gorge near Peshawar. A kayaker in a bright orange vessel punches directly into a steep standing wave, sending a fan of white spray into the air. The water surface churns with dark, heavy ripples and frothy crests, contrasting against the smooth, wet sand of the riverbank. Wind whips loose grasses along the shore, bending them sharply toward the water. The kayaker leans forward with intense focus, muscles taut as the boat crests the wave. In the background, steep gorge walls rise vertically, their surfaces textured with erosion patterns and patches of sparse, turn-of-season vegetation clinging to the rock faces. The final splash of water hangs suspended against the gray stone.
