Wet Towel in Kyoto

by Bethany Barr

Winter noon light strikes the concrete apron of a traditional Kyoto machiya, where a shopkeeper pauses to wring out a thick, white bath towel over a metal sink. The heavy cotton fabric, saturated with cold water, drapes heavily against his hands, against the dry, pale stone beneath. Beside the sink, a cluster of dark green geraniums in terracotta pots sits dormant but vibrant against the stark seasonal light, their leaves casting sharp, geometric shadows across the tiled floor. A wooden peg basket hangs from a hook nearby, holding a single red towel, while a brass tea infuser rests on a windowsill, catching the glare.
