Wet Newspaper Stuck to Fire Hydrant in Muridke

by Charlie Wells

Monsoon rain slicks the pavement outside a corner cafe in Muridke, turning the asphalt into a dark, reflective mirror. A crumpled newspaper lies pressed against the base of a red fire hydrant, its wet pages swollen and adhered to the metal surface. Headlight beams slice through the predawn gloom, momentarily illuminating the soaked print and the dripping hydrant before plunging the scene back into alley shadow. Low-hanging clouds press down on the street, their gray mass visible above the cafe awning. Water beads on the hydrant's ridges and runs in thin rivulets down the wet newsprint. at the edge is a tear in the paper edge where rainwater has pooled, creating a small, dark puddle against the rusted metal.
