Welding Sparks Under Bridge Construction in Cuba

by Albert McMillan

Vivid orange sparks cascade downward from a steel joint beneath a massive concrete bridge platform, cutting through the humid, mist-laden air of a Cuban excavation site. Thick, translucent fog rests on the damp earth and rusted metal, softening the harsh edges of the construction zone. Safety tape in yellow and black marks the perimeter of the wet, muddy ground where puddles reflect the diffuse, overcast sky. Heavy steel beams converge toward a distant vanishing point, creating a geometric tunnel of gray and rust. The sparks fall in a dense, glowing shower against the dark, weathered underbelly of the structure, illuminating droplets of moisture suspended in the air. One beam of light catches the wet texture of the safety boots standing firm in the mud at the edge of the frame.
