Watering Herbs in Athens

A thin, grey mist rests on the narrow, steep staircase of Plaka, softening the edges of whitewashed neoclassical facades and rusted iron railings. An elderly woman in a faded floral housecoat stands on a landing, carefully watering a row of terracotta pots containing basil and mint, the water catching the diffuse dawn light. Beside her, a simple enamel washbasin holds a few scattered artichokes, their spiky green leaves against the smooth, wet stone steps.
