Washing Face in Athens

The damp dusk light of Athens falls through the open doorway of a cramped, ground-floor bathroom, illuminating steam that rests on the peeling white ceramic tiles. A woman in a faded floral housecoat stands at the sink, her reflection blurred in the mirror, while her bare foot rests on a small, chipped stool to reach the faucet. On the rim of the basin, a terracotta bowl holds a pile of damp, dark handkerchiefs, their fabric heavy with water. Rain streaks the window above the sink, distorting the view of the narrow alley outside where a rusted iron hook hangs from a corroded pipe, swaying slightly in the wind.
