Water in Athens at First Light
by Pamela Sweet
First light after rain illuminates a bustling street corner in Athens where a vendor stands behind a wooden crate filled with bright orange citrus fruits. Beads of water rest on the rough skins of the lemons and oranges, catching the diffuse morning glow. The vendor, wearing a faded blue apron, arranges the fruit with practiced ease while a customer in a rain-soaked coat reaches out to inspect a selection. Behind them, the gray stone facade of a traditional neoclassical building rises, its surface slick with moisture. Puddles on the cobblestones reflect the muted sky and the vibrant colors of the produce, creating a lively scene of daily commerce amidst the damp Greek morning.
