Pushing Cart in Rome
by Gladys Nunez
Rain-slicked Via del Corso glistens under the heavy, diffused gray of early morning, with puddles reflecting the muted tones of surrounding stucco facades. A vendor in a translucent yellow raincoat maneuvers a heavy metal rolling cart past a closed bakery, the wheels leaving faint trails in the standing water. Ripples expand outward from the cart’s tires, distorting the reflection of a nearby awning. Beside the cart, a stack of folded metal stools waits in a dry alcove, their silver surfaces dull against the wet pavement. A discarded orange peel, curled and bright against the gray concrete, catches the eye near the curb.
