Damp dusk settles over a narrow London laneway where neon from a nearby kebab shop bleeds wetly onto the pavement. A vendor’s cart sits half-hidden under a corrugated awning, its metal edges streaked with grime and rain. On the counter, a plastic tea tray holds stacked styrofoam containers, one lid slightly askew, revealing steam rising into the cool air. Beside it, a folded umbrella leans against a crate of lemons, their skins beaded with condensation that catches the pinkish glow of the sign. A spool of orange thread lies discarded near a pair of rubber gloves, unused.
