Cool morning light spills across the wet granite pavement of the Royal Mile, where a lone figure in a heavy wool coat pauses beside a closed iron gate. Steam rises in thin, gray ribbons from a street vendor’s cart, the heat battling the damp Edinburgh air. On the cart’s scarred wooden counter, a stainless steel thermos sits next to a pair of worn leather gloves, evidence of a long night’s work. A small digital thermometer clipped to the cart’s side reads just above freezing. In the background, the blurred silhouette of the castle looms over the mist, while a single yellow taxi speeds past, its headlights cutting through the gloom.
