A street vendor in Quito’s historic center tends to a small cart under the heavy gray weight of misty dawn, the cool air clinging to the wet cobblestones that reflect the dim glow of sodium streetlights. The vendor, wrapped in a thick wool poncho, lifts a dented metal bucket to pour hot water into a row of chipped ceramic mugs, steam rising in thin, immediate wisps that vanish into the fog. Beside the cart, a battered toolbox sits open on the ground, its tools scattered near a dust mop leaning against a colonial stone wall, evidence of a morning routine interrupted by the cold.
