Vendor Below in Quito
Sunlight strikes the weathered limestone facade of a colonial building in Quito, illuminating a narrow balcony where a silver tiffin tin rests on a wooden railing alongside a small potted basil plant. Below, a street vendor arranges bright yellow churros on a metal tray, the steam rising into the crisp late morning air. A colorful kite, its tail frayed from the wind, is caught briefly in the branches of a nearby ceibo tree, adding a splash of red against the gray stone. The verticality of the historic center, with tiled roofs and distant Andean peaks visible in the hazy background, at the base of the everyday commerce and casual clutter in a distinctly Ecuadorian urban landscape.
