Naranjillas at Flat Noon Light in Quito
by Kristy Orr
Under the flat, shadowless glare of noon, a vendor in the La Mariscal district balances a wooden crate of bright yellow naranjillas against his hip. The translucent, orange-hued fruits rest in rough slats, their acidic glow against the faded blue plastic tarp draped over his shoulder. One paper grocery bag, stained with juice and marked with faded red ink, hangs from the crate’s edge, its contents bulging slightly. The vendor’s hand grips the wood firmly, fingers dusted with pale pollen, while the blurred background reveals the white stucco facade of a colonial building, its windows shuttered tight against the heat.
