Upward Rain Storm Shutters Sapporo Banquet Hall
by Everett Wood
Crisp silver streaks of rain ascend vertically through the high ceiling of a vast banquet hall near Sapporo, defying gravity while the room waits in quiet preparation. Warm firelight spills from unseen sources, casting long, polished shadows along the dark wood walls and highlighting the intricate metalwork of a storm-shutter crank-handle tray in the foreground. The tray sits isolated on a marble surface, surrounded by neatly arranged props that separate housekeeping, pool, and banquet workflows. Outside the tall windows, the late summer night remains still, but inside, the impossible rain glitters against the amber glow. The polished floor reflects the upward streaks, creating a mirror image of the suspended water that stretches toward the distant ceiling beams. One brass gear on the crank handle catches the light, gleaming against the dark, waiting room.
