Upward Rain Hoop Oak Barrel Cooper Ichalkaranji
by Lydia Pope
Crisp silver streaks of rain fall upward from the cobblestones, slicing through the cool morning air in Ichalkaranji. A cooper stands low in the frame, raising a heavy wooden mallet to drive a metal hoop onto a massive oak barrel. The mist rests on the ground, swirling around the cooper's boots while the silver rain trails ascend past his raised arm. Sunlight cuts through the haze, illuminating the rough texture of the oak staves and the gleam of the tightening metal band. The barrel sits firmly on the wet stones, its grain dark with moisture. Each upward droplet catches the light like a suspended thread, creating a stark contrast against the earthy browns of the wood and the grey fog. at the edge is the precise alignment of the metal hoop against the curved oak, defying gravity as the rain streams above it.
