Uphill Water Flow in Moldovan Foothills in from a ridge above layered foothills in Moldova

Uphill Water Flow in Moldovan Foothills

by Alyssa Jacobson

Midsummer sunlight falls through a canopy of green leaves, casting dappled patterns across a dry arroyo bed in the layered foothills of Moldova. A surreal stream defies gravity, winding upward along the visible slope of the earth. The water gathers in a perfect, shimmering pool at the highest ridge point, suspended against the sky. Wind whips the surface of this impossible accumulation, creating sharp ripples that catch the bright morning light. Below the pool, the water flows back down the slope, creating a continuous loop of movement. The texture of the dry, reddish soil contrasts with the liquid motion. One leaf rests on the surface of the uphill pool, held steady by the upward current.
