Untangling Kite in Mumbai
by Alexis Ayers
The deep indigo wash of Mumbai’s blue hour settles over a cramped rooftop terrace where laundry lines crisscross against the fading sky. A young man in a faded yellow t-shirt balances precariously on a wobbly step stool, reaching up to untangle a vibrant red kite from the tangled wires of a satellite dish. Below him, a plastic table holds a half-peeled orange, its bright rind against the dimming light, while a stack of yesterday’s newspapers sits damp with evening dew. The rough texture of exposed brick and the sleek, dark curve of a nearby water tank, showing the chaotic, colorful rhythm of urban life as the city lights begin to flicker on in the distance.
