Flat noon light washes over a cramped chawl stairwell landing where a young boy balances a battered skateboard against a rusted iron railing, its wheels caked with gray dust. Below him, a woman in a faded cotton sari scrubs a concrete step with a stiff shoe brush, water pooling in the uneven tiles. The scene is cluttered with domestic clutter: a stack of plastic buckets, a pair of worn chappals left by the door, and a small brass lamp on a shelf. A nickel latch on a nearby metal door catches a sharp, white glint, against the matte, sun-bleached walls.
