Tending Geraniums in Tunis

by Gregory Rich

Late afternoon sun slants across a weathered stucco facade in the Medina, casting long, sharp shadows that carve depth into the narrow alleyway. A local gardener, his hands stained with soil and age, carefully tends to a cluster of potted geraniums resting on a low stone ledge, their vibrant red blooms offering a stark contrast to the dusty ochre walls. Beside him, a simple rattan stool sits empty, waiting for a moment of rest, while a few enamel bowls, chipped and utilitarian, are stacked nearby, holding water for the thirsty plants.
