Swinging Pendulum Lamp in Austin Atrium

by Bernard Ayers

Copper-toned light floods the vaulted atrium near Zilker Park, illuminating the arc of a swinging pendulum lamp. The long exposure transforms the fixture into a luminous streak of white against the deepening twilight. Sunset reflections pool on the smooth, clean surfaces of the surrounding walls, creating soft halos of orange and gold. The tight framing isolates the motion blur from the architectural details, showing the rhythmic sway of the lamp. Early summer air leaves the space clear of clutter, allowing the glowing trail to stand out against the darkening interior. The blur ends abruptly near the bottom, where the lamp's metallic housing catches a final glint of the setting sun.
