Sunflower Disk Pollen Macro in Kollam

by Ryan Richard

Bright fluorescent tubes cast harsh, vertical shafts of light through the predawn darkness of an indoor room in Kollam. The beam illuminates a dense cloud of suspended dust motes dancing around a split seed pod. Inside the cracked shell, the sunflower disk reveals a textured surface of tightly packed florets. Tiny, golden-yellow pollen grains rest on the rough, fibrous edges of the broken husk, catching the stark electric glow. The surrounding darkness swallows the rest of the room, focusing attention solely on the granular detail of the seed structure and the sharp contrast between the organic gold and the clinical white light. A fine line of shadow cuts across the lower right edge of the pod.
