Stonemason Chisels Gargoyle on Cathedral Scaffold in on an active construction deck in Brittany

Stonemason Chisels Gargoyle on Cathedral Scaffold

by Peter Welch

Silver winter light spills across a high construction deck in Brittany, illuminating a stonemason at work on a Gothic gargoyle. The worker leans against a wooden scaffold, the grain of the timber rough against the smooth, pale stone of the cathedral wall. Chalk dust hangs in the air, catching the glow of the early summer moon. The mason grips a chisel and hammer, his posture disciplined as he shapes the mythical beast's wing. Leading lines of the scaffolding rails guide the gaze upward along the vertical stone columns. One chisel mark glints on the wet surface of the carved stone, sharp and precise against the darkening sky.
