Stone Mason Carving Gargoyle in Chicago Winter Mist

by Dennis Fuentes

Thick gray mist rests on the limestone facade of a Gothic Revival cathedral in Chicago, softening the sharp edges of a massive stone gargoyle. A stone mason stands on a wooden scaffold, his heavy wool coat and thick gloves against the cold, pale stone. Dappled sunlight falls through bare winter branches, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow across the rough texture of the carved face. The mason holds a chisel and mallet, paused mid-strike as snowflakes drift silently in the mist. The vastness of the cathedral wall dwarfs the solitary figure, showing the scale of the work against the wintry sky. One chip of white stone rests on the scaffold edge.
