Stone Transformed Excavator Bucket Mali Night in at a muddy site access road in Mali

Stone Transformed Excavator Bucket Mali Night

by Meredith Boone

Mud rests on the tracks of a heavy excavator resting beside a steel trench box on a wet access road. The metal bucket, usually bright orange, has partially petrified into grey stone while the hydraulic arm remains solid metal. The wooden slats of a discarded crate nearby have fused into solid rock, yet the grain pattern persists clearly within the mineral surface. Silvery winter light floods the dry, dusty landscape under a perfectly clear night sky. Fine dust settles on the muddy ground, highlighting the texture of the earth and the smooth, cold surface of the stone-wood hybrid. A sharp shadow falls across the trench box corner, at the base of the impossible transformation in the harsh reality of the Malian construction site.
