Steam from Taco Cart in Caracas Rain

by Delilah Hogan

Rain slicks the pavement around a metal taco cart parked beside a bus shelter in Caracas. Thick white steam rises from the cart's grill, curling upward into the midnight air where it meets the falling drizzle. The scene sits in deep shadow, defined only by a sharp rim of light catching the wet edges of the cart and the glass panels of the shelter. Condensation blurs the shelter's windows, creating a hazy barrier between the interior and the street. Water droplets rest on the corrugated metal roof of the cart, reflecting the faint glow of a distant streetlamp. A plastic tarp hangs loosely from the cart's side, dripping steadily onto the wet asphalt below. The steam dissipates quickly, blending into the dark, damp atmosphere of the wet season night.
