Steam Condensation on Autoclave Door in at an engineering workbench near Zhujiajiao, Shanghai

Steam Condensation on Autoclave Door

by Gregory Pate

Dense droplets of condensed steam rest on the curved stainless steel surface of a laboratory autoclave door, catching the sharp midsummer afternoon light. The metallic surface reflects the bright shafts of sunlight cutting through the indoor air, illuminating floating dust particles that drift in the beams. Condensation beads vary in size, some merging into larger rivulets that slowly trail downward along the vertical grain of the metal. The background dissolves into a soft blur of the engineering workbench near Zhujiajiao, Shanghai, where indistinct tools and surfaces remain out of focus. The shallow depth of field isolates the texture of the water against the cool, industrial finish of the instrument. One droplet rests on the lower edge of the door, suspended just before falling.
