Starlit Reflection on Flooded Salt Flat in beneath a wind-cut desert escarpment in the Russian Far East

Starlit Reflection on Flooded Salt Flat

by Vernon Rush

Predawn darkness blankets a flooded salt flat beneath a wind-cut desert escarpment in the Russian Far East. The wet surface acts as a perfect mirror, doubling the scattered starlight above. Humid air hovers just above the water, visible as a faint, low-lying vapor that softens the edges of the dark rock walls. A narrow frame formed by the jagged rock overhang creates a window looking out onto the mirrored sky. The scene remains cool and still, with the white salt crust contrasting against the deep indigo of the water. The reflection of a single bright star sits directly below its real counterpart, aligned perfectly by the stillness of the flood. A thin layer of moisture glistens on the rough stone edge of the foreground frame.
