Stacked Hatch Crates in Winter Barn Light

by Daniel Pacheco

Cool blue twilight bleeds across a weathered stack of galvanized metal hatch-date crates, their surfaces scuffed with the grit of early winter. Strands of dry straw rest on the corrugated sides, catching the last gray daylight that falls through the barn opening. Rough hemp rope coils around the crate edges, fraying slightly against the damp earth below. A layer of feed dust coats the rubber floor mats near the base, against the smooth, cold metal. The crates stand rigid against a backdrop of a simple windbreak, their paper labels peeling in the damp air. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the ground, highlighting the texture of the wet soil and the distinct separation between the metal, straw, and rubber elements.
