Spring Crocuses Push Through Snow in Norwegian Garden

by Trevor Vaughan

Violet and white crocus petals emerge directly from patches of melting snow within terraced garden beds. The stone retaining walls of the terraces frame the scene, their rough gray surfaces damp with moisture. A thick, white mist obscures the background, softening the edges of the garden plots while keeping the foreground sharp. The light is flat and even, typical of a midday overcast sky during the midnight sun, casting no hard shadows. Slushy water pools in the depressions of the soil between the flower stems. The delicate, crinkled texture of the crocus petals contrasts with the granular, icy crust of the surrounding snow. one drop of meltwater rests on the tip of a green leaf at the very edge of the frame.
