Soweto Weather Station Antenna at Sunset
by April Berger
Heavy gray clouds press low against a sky bruised with fading orange and violet light. In the immediate foreground, the sharp silhouette of a weather station antenna rises from a flat concrete platform. The metal structure appears dark and rigid, its complex array of sensors and rods cutting a precise geometric shape against the soft, diffused glow of the setting sun. Surrounding the base, the rough texture of the concrete floor meets scattered patches of dry, yellow grass typical of early summer in the region. The lighting is flat and even, casting no long shadows, only a subtle darkening of the antenna's edges. A small, red warning light on the upper boom remains unlit in the heavy overcast. at the edge is the thin wire of the antenna extending toward the right edge, disappearing into the gloom.
