Morning Tea in Hong Kong

by Clifford Gray

A wet asphalt street in Sham Shui Po reflects the pale, diffused light of early morning, where a street vendor’s metal cart steams with morning tea. The vendor, wearing a faded blue apron, holds a small stainless steel tea infuser spoon, lifting it from a large aluminum pot to check the steeping oolong. Beside the cart, a stack of plastic stools sits overturned, their red surfaces slick with recent rain. In the background, the narrow alleyway is lined with hanging laundry and faded signage in traditional Chinese characters, while a lone commuter in a yellow raincoat walks past, ignoring the steam rising from the vendor’s station.
