Sky Lanterns Rising Over Beijing Waterfront Before Sunrise

Pale gold light spills across the horizon, cutting through a thin layer of morning haze that hangs low over the dark water. Hundreds of paper lanterns, glowing with warm orange and soft yellow fire, drift upward in a dense, layered stream. The silhouettes of distant trees and traditional eaves line the far bank, at the base of the floating lights in a specific riverside setting. Cool blue shadows rest on the foreground water, contrasting sharply with the ascending warmth of the paper globes. Some lanterns have just lifted from the ground, while others float high enough to appear as tiny stars against the deepening twilight sky.
