Smith Working in Kathmandu

Sunlight cuts through the dusty air of a narrow Thamel alley, illuminating a brass smith at work on a low wooden stool. His bare feet rest near a pair of worn rubber slippers, discarded for the heat of the afternoon. Around him, the ground is scattered with small brass shavings and a few marigold petals blown from a nearby shrine offering. He holds a heavy chisel against a spinning lathe, sparks flying in short, bright bursts. The shopfront is cluttered with hanging prayer flags and stacks of copper pots, their surfaces reflecting the harsh midday glare. A neighbor watches from a doorway, sipping tea from a steel cup.
