Skier in Tuck on Taipei Harbor Quay at Dawn
by Zara Weaver
Soft gray light from a late summer dawn spills over the concrete expanse of a Taipei harbor quay, where a skier in a tight tuck position races forward. Low-hanging clouds obscure the sky, diffusing the illumination into a flat, even glow that highlights the sheen on the skier's dark racing suit. The athlete's body forms a compact aerodynamic shape, knees bent deeply, poles tucked close against the torso. Behind the racer, weathered mooring bollards and steel fenders line the edge of the quay, their surfaces damp with morning moisture. The water of the harbor laps gently against the concrete wall, reflecting the pale, overcast sky. In the distance, the faint silhouette of a crane rises above the mist, anchoring the industrial setting. The skier's shadow stretches long and thin across the wet pavement, ending abruptly at the edge of a painted yellow safety line.
