Shrine Maiden Sweeping Courtyard at Golden Hour
by Betty Wells
Deep orange light from the setting sun stretches across the wet stone paving of a Shinto shrine courtyard near Tokyo. A shrine maiden in traditional white hakama and red vestment stands in profile, her posture upright as she pushes a long bamboo broom across the damp ground. Rain has left the flagstones slick and reflective, mirroring the warm glow of the low sun. Above, the sky remains a flawless, deep blue with no clouds, contrasting sharply with the humid, rain-soaked earth below. Water droplets rest on the green moss bordering the path and glisten on the wooden pillars of the shrine entrance. The broom bristles, worn and flexible, press firmly against the stone, displacing a small film of water that ripples under the sweeping motion.
