Shop Entrance in Beirut
by Milo Horn
First light after rain washes over a narrow Gemmayze alley, turning the cracked asphalt into a dark mirror that reflects the faded ochre and mint green facades of Ottoman-era buildings. A small, cluttered repair shop sits open to the street, its interior spilling onto the wet pavement where a rusted metal bucket catches dripping water from a leaky roof gutter. Inside the dim doorway, a pair of heavy-duty tongs rests on a workbench alongside a scattered set of coping saws and tool caddies, their steel surfaces gleaming with dampness. Outside, a single terracotta bowl holds a struggling potted plant, its leaves heavy with droplets, while a discarded key blank lies half-buried in the grit near the threshold.
