Seamstress just after sunrise in Beirut
by Garrett Hart
Morning light spills through the open shutter of a narrow downtown Beirut café, illuminating a cluttered counter where a seamstress in a faded cardigan adjusts the tension on an industrial sewing machine. Beside her, a stack of worn leather jackets waits for repair, their zippers catching the early sun. A chipped ceramic jar holds bent needles and spools of thread, while a single rake head leans against the brick wall outside, its tines dusted with dry Beirut grit. The scene is busy but focused, with the rhythmic motion of the machine contrasting against the stillness of the street outside. A ceramic coffee mug sits abandoned near a half-finished hem, steam rising faintly in the cool air.
