Shielding Laundry in Havana

Rain slicks the peeling lime-green facade of a corner bodega in Havana, where neon signs bleed red and blue reflections onto the wet asphalt. Under the awning, a local woman in a faded floral dress carefully balances a wicker laundry basket filled with damp white sheets, shielding them from the drizzle with a bright yellow plastic fan. The basket rests on a stack of chipped ceramic plates, their glaze catching the dim streetlight. Soap streaks run down the adjacent tiled wall, evidence of recent cleaning, while mangoes sit in a cardboard box nearby, their yellow skins glowing against the grey dusk.
