Brooms just after sunrise in Havana

by Maverick Hartman

Early morning light spills across a worn concrete stoop in Old Havana, illuminating a cluster of discarded household items left to dry. A faded blue apron hangs loosely over a rusted railing, its fabric stiff with salt and sun. Beside it, a pair of straw brooms leans against the peeling lime-wash wall, their bristles frayed from years of sweeping colonial streets. A shallow puddle on the uneven pavement catches a distorted reflection of the brightening sky and the curved facade of a nearby balcony.
