Sheltering Umbrellas in Havana

by Manuel Callahan

Rain-slicked colonial balconies drip onto the cracked pavement of a narrow Calle Obispo side street, where the dusk light turns the wet cobblestones into a mirror of neon and sodium vapor. A local vendor stands under a sagging corrugated tin awning, shielding a stack of colorful plastic umbrellas with a worn canvas tarp, their handles fanning out like bright ribs against the gray gloom. Beside him, a chipped ceramic saucepan sits on a makeshift crate, steaming faintly in the chill air, while a pair of rubber sandals rests near the threshold, toes pointing inward toward the dimly lit interior.
