Shichi-Go-San Children in Sulaymaniyah Winter Night in in the old quarter in Sulaymaniyah

Shichi-Go-San Children in Sulaymaniyah Winter Night

by Veronica Bradford

Vibrant red and blue silk kimonos stand out against the gray, fog-drenched stone of the old quarter in Sulaymaniyah. Three children, bundled in traditional garments, stand shoulder to shoulder on a damp cobblestone street. The heavy winter air hangs low, softening the edges of the ancient masonry walls behind them. Distant street lamps cast a weak, yellow spill that illuminates the intricate patterns on the fabric and creates a faint glow around the children's heads. The ground is slick with moisture, reflecting the sparse light in elongated, shimmering streaks. Their dark hair is neatly styled, against the pale, foggy background. The texture of the heavy winter coats worn by accompanying adults is visible, at the base of the scene in the cold reality of a late night in the Middle East.
