Bhutanese Tshechu Dancers at Puerto Madero Dawn

by Vicki Higgins

Vibrant crimson and indigo silk masks rest against the wet cobblestones of Puerto Madero as the first sunrise rays pierce the humid morning air. Four Cham dancers in layered brocade costumes stand in a tight formation near the water's edge, their heavy robes glistening with fresh rain droplets. The cool pre-dawn light reflects off the polished stone, highlighting the intricate gold embroidery on their sleeve cuffs. Behind them, the modern glass facades of Buenos Aires skyscrapers rise sharply, creating a stark contrast with the traditional Bhutanese attire. Water beads roll slowly down the heavy wool of a dancer's outer tunic, pooling on the slick pavement before vanishing into the cracks. One golden tassel hangs motionless from the lowest mask, catching the pale morning glow.
