Sewing Fabric in Accra
by Rick Dunlap
Sunlight slices through the corrugated zinc roof of a roadside tailor’s workshop in Jamestown, casting sharp, diagonal bands of bright gold across the dusty concrete floor. A seamstress sits on a low wooden stool, her hands deftly guiding a length of vibrant wax print fabric through a heavy industrial sewing machine. To her left, a woven basket overflows with spools of thread and half-finished garments, while a second basket holds discarded pattern paper. Behind her, the open doorway frames a glimpse of the busy street, where a neighbor pauses to watch the work. The warm late afternoon light highlights the texture of the fabric and the focused expression on her face, creating a scene of industrious creativity.
