Laundry Service in Accra
by Terri Hodges
Under the harsh, shadowless glare of Accra’s midday sun, a street-side laundry service operates with efficient rhythm on a concrete slab shaded by a corrugated metal awning. A woman in a vibrant wax-print wrapper leans over a large galvanized basin, scrubbing a heavy blanket chest with a coarse clothes brush, her movements practiced and forceful. Beside her, a row of empty deck chairs waits in the heat, their canvas stretched taut against the sun. The wet concrete floor reflects the bright sky, creating a slick, shimmering surface that mirrors the chaotic array of hanging laundry above. Water rings from the rinsing process spread across the ground, distorting the reflection of a passing yellow tro-tro bus in the distance.
