Shaking Broom in Madrid
by Allen Tate
Rain slicks the cobblestones of a Madrid plaza as dusk settles, casting a cool, diffused gray light over the scene. A local vendor in a yellow rain poncho leans against a wooden cart, shaking out a wet broom to clear debris, the bristles dark and heavy with water. Beside him, a small pile of baguettes sits in a wicker basket, their crusts glistening under the streetlamp’s warm, yellow spill. A stray dog, shaking off droplets, pauses near the cart’s wheel, sniffing at the air. The wet pavement reflects the neon sign of a nearby taberna, adding a splash of electric blue to the muted tones. The vendor glances up, catching the moment with a weary but amused smile.
