Seamstress Working in Delhi
by Cedric Chang
Under the harsh sodium-vapor glare of a Delhi street corner, a seamstress sits cross-legged on a frayed braided rug, her needle case open beside a chipped glass goblet used for tea. The thin scratches on the low wooden stool she leans against catch the mixed city light, revealing layers of use beneath the polish. Behind her, the blurred motion of a rickshaw passes, its red taillight smearing across the damp concrete pavement. Her slippers rest casually near the rug’s edge, while a thermos sits inverted, steam faintly visible in the cool night air. The quiet intensity of her work against the chaotic backdrop of the city, with the goblet reflecting the neon sign of a nearby shop.
