Adjusting Fabric in Mexico City

Sunlight cuts sharply through the open doorway of a textile workshop in Centro Histórico, illuminating a seamstress standing on a wooden step stool to adjust a heavy bolt of crimson fabric hanging from a high peg rail. The bright winter noon light catches the speckled stoneware glaze of a water pitcher on a nearby workbench, against the smooth enamel bowls stacked beside it. She pauses, holding a spool of thread, while the crisp shadows of the window frame fall across the concrete floor.
