Scientist labeling jars beside waterfall wall

by Rita Middleton

Hard midday sunlight strikes the turquoise and white glazed tiles of the Shah-i-Zinda mausoleum wall, creating sharp, high-contrast reflections. A thin stream of water pours vertically from a hairline fracture in the ancient brickwork, defying gravity as it lands in a rusted metal basin below. A scientist in a white coat stands beside the basin, holding a glass specimen jar with a handwritten label. The air holds a fine mist from the impossible cascade, catching the light in suspended droplets. The background blurs into soft greens and ochres, isolating the figure and the surreal water source. The water's surface ripples around the base of the jar, distorting the reflection of the blue sky.
