Sailor Adjusts Rigging on Hillside Near Tokyo
by Morgan Avila
Wet hemp ropes glisten under the fading twilight as a sailor in a heavy oilskin coat leans into the task of adjusting rigging on a grassy hillside. The fabric clings to his shoulders, damp from the recent rain, while the rough texture of the ropes contrasts with the smooth, slick grass beneath his boots. In the background, the Tokyo skyline begins to emerge, a grid of distant orange and white lights piercing the humid, grey air. Early winter leaves the hillside bare, with short, brownish grass and scattered pebbles visible in the dimming light. The sailor stands in the right third of the frame, his posture rigid with focus against the soft, glowing horizon where the city meets the sky. One droplet of water slides down the frayed end of a rope, catching the faint reflection of a streetlamp.
